Dr. Youngman Oh's Idea Development Award proposal for the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) of the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) has been recommended for funding. Youngman Oh, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Biochemistry, is Director of the Oncogenomics and Proteomics Laboratory. The grant, entitled “Novel NF-Kappa B Inhibitory Action of IGF Binding Protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in Prostate Cancer: New Paradigm for Suppression of Angiogenesis and Chemoresistance," has been awarded $558,750 for 3 years starting December 1, 2006.
Joy L. Ware, PhD, Professor of Pathology, introduced faculty, students and staff to the emergent field of Conservation Medicine during her Grand Rounds presentation last week. The last Research in Progress for Spring 2006, was given by a student working in Dr. Youngman Oh's Oncogenomics and Proteomics Research Laboratory. Michelle Trevino presented data relating to IGF and cellular senescence. Research in Progress presentations will resume in September.
On June 1, 2006, the Department of Pathology held its annual Graduation Banquet to honor graduating and departing faculty, residents, fellows and doctoral candidates. Celeste N. Powers, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Chair, Division of Anatomic Pathology, has been named Paul Brindley Distinguished Visiting Professor for 2006-2007. The professorship was set up in honor of Paul Brindley, a beloved teacher of pathology and former chair at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and recognizes an eminent pathologist, well known for scholarship in the field, but also, importantly, someone with a real gift for teaching.
On February 1st, the Science Museum of Virginia began the winter 2006 session of the Mini Medical School with a focus on "Healthy Aging."
