Our Toxicology laboratories are equipped to support the university’s clinical and basic science research programs and to provide the most sophisticated clinical patient testing possible. The Forensic Toxicology Specialty Testing Laboratory provides unique flexibility and a high degree of utility in the academic health center environment. The forensic laboratory carries out a broad range of studies in both clinical and forensic areas. In general research projects in this laboratory have focused on analytical methods for the detection and quantification of drugs and poisons in biological specimens such as blood, urine and postmortem tissues, as well as, by-products of the synthesis of illicit drugs. Current research projects include:

• Determination of marijuana cannabinoids in body tissues and fluids.
• Analytical and epidemically studies on “driving under the influence of drugs”.
• Detection and quantitative analysis of opiates and other analgesics in pain management patients.

The forensic laboratory provides the opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate student students to gain experience in forensic and analytical toxicology.

Students interested in pursuing a doctorate degree in forensic toxicology should apply to the Graduate Program in the Department of Pathology.

Students enrolled in the Master of Forensic Sciences Program in the College of Humanities and Sciences may fulfill their 300-hour Internship requirement in our forensic laboratory. Masters students interested in an Internship should complete the required Forensic Science Program application and contact Dr. Poklis.

Students enrolled in the undergraduate Forensic Sciences Program in the College of Humanities and Sciences may complete an Internship elective in our forensic laboratory.
