Slides 45270-40106 A & B

Giant Cell (Temporal) Arteritis (45270-40106)
This low power view of a cross-section of a temporal artery shows an inflammatory infiltrate in the media and intimal fibrosis. The thickening of the media and the lumenal narrowing caused by the intimal fibrosis account for the ischemic changes that give rise to clinical symptoms. Although the temporal artery is the vessel most frequently affected, other small and medium arteries of the body may be involved. Involvement of the ophthalmic artery can result in loss of vision.

Giant Cell (Temporal) Arteritis (45270-40106)
Higher power view showing the intimal fibrosis and infiltration of the media by inflammatory cells, chiefly lymphocytes and eosinophils. There is an irregular disruption of the media at the level of the internal elastica. In this area, there are two or three multinucleated giant cells. Giant cells are part of the inflammatory infiltrate in most, but not all cases of this form of vasculitis.
