High Power (33010-40900)
A high power view shows the cytologic features of the cells composing an Aschoff body. There are lymphocytes, an occasional plasma cell, and the large activated histiocytes known as Anitschkow cells. The nuclei of some of these cells have a distinctive chromatin pattern and are referred to as "caterpillar" cells. There are occasional multinucleated forms, which are known as Aschoff cells. All of these cells represent an inflammatory response to the small points of fibrinoid necrosis that result from antigen-antibody interaction.
