Cardiomyopathy (33550-49240)
A characteristic histologic pattern in the idiopathic forms of dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the combination of myocyte hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis, as illustrated in this slide. As you have seen, these changes are not specific, since they are also seen in myocardial hypertrophy due to hypertension, valvular disease and ischemic heart disease. The diagnosis of cardiomyopathy requires the exclusion of these conditions.

3-7 Dilated Cardiomyopathy
This appearance is typical, but not specific for the idiopathic form of dilated cardiomyopathy. The heart appears large and globular. Typically, the heart weight is over 500 grams.
