Lab 1

(1) Fatty change (liver): Grossly, the liver is swollen, heavier than normal, yellowish and greasy.

(2) Gangrene (toe): Gangrene is a form of necrosis, usually massive (especially of a limb) sometimes with putrefaction when the dead tissue is invaded by organisms (wet gangrene), sometimes without putrefaction as the dead tissue is dry and resistant to bacterial growth (dry gangrene). The necrosis of gangrene may result from trauma or more commonly from ischemia as seen here.

(3) Hypertrophy and hyperplasia (prostate and bladder): The prostate is at least three to four times the normal size and has a huge median bar which chronically obstructs urinary flow. The smooth muscle of the bladder wall is hypertrophied in an attempt to overcome the obstruction.
