Amyloidosis includes a variety of conditions involving deposition of one of a variety of proteins in a Beta-pleated sheet configuration. At low magnification, the bulk of amyloid fibril deposits are present in the mesangium with encroachment on glomerular capillary lumina.

At higher magnification, the amyloid fibrils are haphazardly arranged, long non-branching filaments measuring 8-12 nm in width. When present in the glomerular basement membrane, amyloid fibrils may display a perpendicular orientation. Ultrastructural distinction of amyloid from other fibrillary structures in the kidney is based primarily on size.
