This is a low-power picture of the normal pituitary gland with the two lobes: anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis).

This is a normal anterior pituitary. Please note the mixture of cells, embedded in a rich reticulin network. Three types of cells can be distinguished, based on the color of the cytoplasm:

  1. acidophils (eosinophilic cytoplasm).

  2. basophils (basophilic cytoplasm).

  3. chromophobic cells (poorly stained cytoplasm).
