Cross section of normal adrenal cortex and medulla. The adrenal cortex synthesizes the steroid hormones. The adrenal medulla is composed of chromaffin cells which synthesize catecholamines.

The adrenal cortex consists of three zones: 1.Glomerulosa: produces mineralocorticoids     (aldosterone).

2.Fasciculata: produces primarily glucocorticoids (cortisol).

3.Reticularis: produces sex steroids (estrogens and androgens).
