Hematology/Oncology Lymph Node Seminar for Medical II Students

Slides 5D-E Enlarged Cervical Lymph Node

This is a 24-year-old female with an enlarged left cervical lymph node. She was otherwise healthy and asymptomatic. Physical exam was remarkable only for an enlarged, left cervical lymph node measuring approximately 5 cm in diameter.

Chest X-ray revealed an anterior mediastinal mass. Abdominal CT scan, lymphangiogram, and a bone marrow biopsy were all normal.

Discussion:

  1. Describe the architectural changes in this lymph node and compare these to those in the previous slide.
  2. What is your diagnosis? Can you subclassify this disease?
  3. A staging laparotomy was performed. The liver biopsies, spleen and abdominal lymph nodes were free of tumor. What stage is this patient's disease?
  4. How could a staging laparotomy influence the type of therapy this patient should receive?
