Gross Pathologic and Radiographic Features of Selected Specimens of Bone

G. Pelvis with Chondrosarcoma

Slide 1
The appearance of this multilobulated mass of grayish, sometimes translucent, hard material should bring to mind a cartilaginous tumor. The white areas are foci of calcification (as seen in your class microscopic slides) and there are areas of hemorrhagic necrosis most likely due to vascular cut-off. The pelvic location is a common one. The pattern of calcification is a help in making the diagnosis for the radiologist.

Slide 2
The radiograph deomonstrates a densely calcified mass originating in the ilium adjacent to the acetabulum. The characteristic dense speckled pattern of calcification with "rings" and "arcs" is a characteristic of a chondroid matrix. This is a common location for a chondrosarcoma.
