The Pathology Clinical Laboratory Sciences Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to senior undergraduate students in the VCU School of Allied Health Professions, Department of Clinical Laboratory Services. Enrique Gerszten, MD, Faculty Teaching Excellence Award Endowment Fund
In 2008, Enrique Gerszten, MD, received the VCU School of Medicine's highest honor, the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. To pay tribute to and extend his legacy, Dr. Gerszten's colleagues and former students are uniting to raise $100,000 to endow that premier teaching award in his name. The Enrique Gerszten, MD Faculty Teaching Excellence Award will be given on an annual basis to one School of Medicine faculty member, selected by a peer-review committee, to recognize outstanding teaching achievements. Alphonse Sirica, MS, PhD, Chair, Division of Cellular and Molecular Pathogenesis, VCU Department of Pathology, was an invited speaker at the 5th Joint Meeting of the Japanese Society for Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterology Association. The meeting was held at the Royton Sapporo Hotel in Sapporo, Japan, on May 7th and 8th, 2009. Dr. Sirica's talk was 'Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma Progression: Molecular Insights from a Novel Rat Model Closely Mimicking the Human Cancer'. Dr. Sirica also served as a session chair for 'Inflammation and Carcinogenesis of the Biliary Tract'.

Celeste N. Powers, MD, PhD, Chair, Division of Anatomic Pathology, has been named Editor in Chief of the journal Cancer Cytopathology. She has been involved with Cancer Cytopathology as a reviewer and associate editor since its launch 11 years ago. State-of-the-art reviews will be solicited in disciplines such as molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, automation, and virtual imaging. Commentaries on issues important to the field will also be solicited. Dr. Powers plans to keep readers up-to-date with issues such as health care policy, changes in certification, practice guidelines, and controversies in reimbursement and research funding. Along with the American Cancer Society and Wiley-Blackwell, Dr. Powers will be looking at ways to enhance the online experience of the journal for readers as well.
Alphonse Sirica, PhD, Chair of the Division of Cellular and Molecular Pathogenesis, VCUHS Department of Pathology, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. This honor was bestowed upon Dr. Sirica by the AGA for his personal commitment to and superior professional achievement in research in the field of gastro enterology.
