David C. Williams Jr., MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology, was awarded an American Society of Hematology Scholar Award for Basic Research Junior Faculty.  The title of the project is, 'Developing a methyl cytosine-binding protein complex as a molecular therapeutic  target'.

The goal of this research is to examine the molecular details of a regulatory protein complex that specifically binds methylated DNA and down regulates gene expression.  The particular complex being studied has been shown to regulate the switch from fetal to adult hemoglobin expression.  Understanding the structural details of this complex will ultimately lead to the development of specific inhibitors that can be used to treat patients with hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell anemia and to treat hematologic malignancies.  Project funding will be for three years, from 7/1/2008-6/30/2011, in the amount of $150,000.
