GRAND ROUNDS PRESENTATION

“An Overview of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia”

Roger S. Riley, MD, PhD, Director of the Coagulation Laboratory and Professor of Pathology presented this week's grand rounds lecture for faculty, residents and staff.

Dr. Riley's topic, “An Overview of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia,” is highlighted in the following educational objectives:

  • Describe the history, structure, biologic function, and pharmacokinetics of heparin.
  • Discuss the common complications of heparin therapy.
  • Recognize the clinical manifestations of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, type II.
  • Outline the laboratory evaluation of a patient with suspected heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, type II.
  • Understand the principles of management of patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, type II, including laboratory monitoring of the different pharmacologic agents used in treatment.
