Dr. Margaret Grimes Elected Trustee of the American Board of Pathology

The Department of Pathology is pleased to announce that Dr. Margaret Grimes, Professor of Pathology, was recently elected a new Trustee of the American Board of Pathology (ABP); she will begin her term of service in January 2007. Dr. Grimes was nominated for this opportunity by the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology (ADASP) during their 16th Annual Meeting in February 2006.

The American Board of Pathology, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, was established in 1936 by the American Medical Association and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. The mission of the ABP is to promote the health of the public by advancing the practice and science of pathology. (1) The ABP is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties responsible for establishing certification standards for clinicians who aspire to practice Pathology. The board consists of 12 Pathologists who not only set the certification standards but also strive to improve the quality of graduate training programs for Pathologists. In addition to primary certifications for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, the board members also oversee standards for 10 subspecialty certifications.

Among her many leadership roles in service of Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Grimes has served as Vice Chair for Graduate Medical Education, Department of Pathology, School of Medicine since 1999; Director of the Pathology Resident Training Program from 1992 through 2005; and as Director of Surgical Pathology from 2001 until 2004. Her leadership extends to an impressive array of national-level committees, several of which she has chaired, including the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Pathology. Dr. Grimes has been honored by numerous teaching awards and was listed among Richmond Magazine's Top Doctors in April of this year. "This appointment is an immense honor. I am very grateful to ADASP for their nomination and support. Serving as a Trustee of the American Board of Pathology presents an unrivaled opportunity to serve the public and the profession, and I look forward to continuing to be involved in the development of the highest standards in graduate medical education, certification, and maintenance of certification for pathologists."
