Virginia Commonwealth University recently held its Founder's Day Alumni Stars awards dinner at the Science Museum of Virginia. Among the 14 honored guests, the sole award for Humanitarian Achievement went to a Professor in the Department of Pathology: Colleen K. Jackson-Cook, PhD. Dr. Jackson-Cook earned her doctorate degree in 1985 from the Department of Human Genetics, Virginia Commonwealth University; she is currently a Professor of Pathology and Director of the Cytogenetic Diagnostics Laboratory, a clinical services lab in the Division of Molecular Diagnostics.
Dr. Jackson-Cook's many academic achievements are highlighted by the work of her graduate students, who go on to practice clinical cytogenetics and earn national recognition in their fields. Her dedication to teaching is evidenced by numerous teaching awards including: recipient of the Outstanding Departmental Teacher Award in Health Sciences Education for Human Genetics in 2000 and 2004, and the Outstanding Teacher Award in Undergraduate Medical Education Best Teacher in the Course Award for M-I Human Genetics in 2005.
Ever dedicated and vigilant in her research efforts, her primary cytogenetics research interests are focused on Down Syndrome and Mosaic Down Syndrome, as well as the emergent area of Chromosomal Changes in Aging. Dr. Jackson-Cook's current grant research projects for which she is either principal or co-investigator, total over $3.1 million.
At the awards dinner, her inspirational speech began with the following:
Winston Churchill once said, "If you have knowledge let others light their candles with it." Our knowledge of human genetics has truly been illuminated by the contributions of the faculty and alumni of the department of Human Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Congratulations to Dr. Colleen K. Jackson-Cook on this distinguished honor for Humanitarian Achievement bestowed by Virginia Commonwealth University!
