GRAND ROUNDS PRESENTATION

"Outreach in Academic Medical Centers"
 

 David S. Wilkinson, MD, PhD, Chairman/Manager of VCUHS Pathology Outreach Program, Department of Pathology, VCUHS presented a grand rounds lecture on Outreach in Academic Medical Centers Friday September 10, 2004, to Pathology Department faculty, residents, and staff.  A brief summary of his presentation is encapsulated below:

"Financial pressures have forced pathology departments in academic medical centers to seek new sources of income.  Marketing their comprehensive array of clinical laboratory services to clients outside of the academic campus is one means to this end.  Academic medical centers are well positioned for success in the outreach laboratory business, but success depends on comprehensive planning, development of adequate infrastructure, compliance with regulations and commitment of faculty and staff.  The outreach program at VCUHS contributes over two million dollars to the medical center's bottom line and enables the Department of Pathology to better support the teaching, clinical service and research missions of the academic medical center."
