"American Medicine and
Pathology: Past, Present and Future"
|
| On
September 17, 2004, Fred G. Silva, MD,
Secretary
Treasurer and Executive Director
United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, Inc.,
shared invaluable insights and current
statistical data about American Medicine and Pathology: Past,
Present and Future. Dr. Silva compared trends concerning
incoming medical students, national residency matching programs and
residents, as they comprise the future of Pathology as well as
American medicine. Another focus of his presentation highlighted
the various specialties and subspecialties within the scope of
Pathology; Dr. Silva discussed the growth of newer specialties,
which include Molecular Genetics, and also those specialties which
are no longer available for American Board of Pathology
certification, such as Immunopathology. |
With regards to attracting medical students into Pathology, Dr.
Silva quoted American novelist Edith Wharton, “There are two ways
of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects
it.” He further summarized his position about recruitment in
this statement, “Attract medical students
into Pathology any way you can, and one by one.”
