The newest faculty member of the VCU Pathology Department is Reena Jain, MD, Assistant Professor of Pathology. Dr. Jain attended medical school at Lady Hardinge Medical College, University of Delhi, India. She completed her residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine and a Gynecological Pathology fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. When asked why she chose Pathology, Dr. Jain had the following comments:
"It was my first day as a resident, back in 1989, sitting at the multi-headed microscope with my Pathology Professor, looking through the eyepiece at a colonic biopsy of a 70-year-old man who was clinically diagnosed as a case of colonic carcinoma. The gastroenterologist was also sitting at the microscope. After carefully scrutinizing the biopsy, my professor diagnosed it as a case of "solitary rectal ulcer syndrome". There was no evidence of malignancy in the biopsy examined. A repeat biopsy was advised, if clinically indicated. The diagnosis remained unchanged even on the second biopsy. The clinician was taken by surprise and said with a smile on his face, "Well! Pathologist's word is a FINAL word." Thus, began my romance with Pathology!
My interest in this fascinating branch of medicine - Pathology - has never diminished and in fact has increased progressively over the years. I have realized that Pathology is equally probing and critical; it has both breadth and depth. The pace of increasing knowledge is furious. The selective, intensive and wide extensive reading that is required to address various challenging clinical problems appeals to me very much, since surgical pathologic diagnosis is a visual exercise, and the eyes do not see what the mind does not know!"
Please welcome Dr. Jain to the Pathology Department at Virginia Commonwealth University! |
