New Neuropathology Faculty Member

"Meet Irina Mikolaenko, MD"

In July the Department of Pathology Virginia Commonwealth University welcomed a new faculty member, Irina Mikolaenko, MD. Dr. Mikolaenko joins Dr. Nitya Ghatak in providing Neuropathology Services for VCUHS. She received her medical degree from the Bukovynian State Medical Academy in the Ukraine; completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; and then moved on to become Chief Resident in Neuropathology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Increasingly intrigued with Neuropathology, Dr. Irina Mikolaenko recently completed her Neuropathology Fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Mikolaenko was initially drawn to the field of pathology while still in medical school; she states, “I was fascinated by the complex problem-solving challenges inherent in the field of pathology.” She continued to gravitate toward Neuropathology while in residency programs due to the continued opportunities for research combined with intense clinical involvement. Dr. Mikolaenko enrolled in numerous elective courses in neurosciences and neuroanatomy while seeking out opportunities to interact with neurologists and neurosurgeons for clinical consultation.

As an Assistant Professor specializing in Neuropathology, regarding her chosen profession she further commented, “Neuropathology is very clinically oriented, especially in terms of neurodegenerative diseases, developmental Neuropathology, nerve and muscle pathology, and metabolic diseases of the central nervous system. Biopsy interpretations demand complex and multi-faceted examination of neuroradiological images and patient history. Just as I revel in the challenges of playing a Mozart symphony on my violin, Neuropathology fulfills a passion to assist the clinician in diagnosing and treating human diseases of the central nervous system.”

The Department of Pathology welcomes Dr. Mikolaenko to the city of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia!
