The newest faculty member in the Department of Pathology is Dr. Ema Berbescu whose clinical specialties are Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology. Dr. Berbescu is not new to VCU though; she recently completed her Cytopathology Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. Previously, she completed a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York where she was Chief Resident for 19 months. Both her internship and medical education took place in Bucharest, Romania; she attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila.
One of the reasons Dr. Berbescu chose to become faculty in the Department of Pathology is the numerous and varied opportunities for teaching residents and undergraduate medical students. She enjoys interacting with the residents and has innate qualities of a gifted teacher and mentor. Dr. Berbescu is eager to share with the residents her knowledge accumulated “ due to the volume and diversity of surgical specimens at the Mayo Clinic”.
Dr. Berbescu is quick to highlight the main reason for staying at VCU and becoming a member of our faculty, "Here I have the unparalleled opportunity to join two of the preeminent Cytopathologists in the country: Celeste N. Powers, MD, PhD, and William J. Frable, MD. I am very fortunate to have this chance to work along side them at the microscope and to continue to learn from their wealth of knowledge and experience." Dr. Berbescu admits she spends most of her time reading slides and medical journals, but when she has a spare moment, she might be found reading a different type of literature, primarily novels and poetry.
