"Meet Michael Idowu, MD, MPH "

One of the newest faculty members in the Department of Pathology is Dr. Michael Idowu whose clinical specialty is Surgical Pathology with an emphasis on breast pathology, cytopathology and fine needle aspiration biopsy. Dr. Idowu recently completed an Oncologic/Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Previously, he completed a Cytopathology Fellowship and a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System where he was Chief Resident for twelve months. Dr. Idowu's medical education took place at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria; he also completed a Masters degree in Public Health at the University of South Carolina.

The primary reasons Dr. Idowu chose the field of Pathology are the opportunities for patient care impact and research. His emphasis on breast pathology addresses one of the most common cancers in women and one in which early diagnosis makes treatment much more effective. By performing procedures such as fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies, Dr. Idowu assists other physicians in making an early diagnosis in a more cost-effective manner. "Although Pathologists are viewed as having less direct patient care, our patient care impact is significant. We are a profession of doctors' doctors." Dr. Idowu will also support the VCU Division of Diagnostic Radiology Breast Imaging Clinic.

Dr. Idowu is an avid reader of Ancient History believing that we can continue to learn from both mistakes and successes of ancient civilizations. Please welcome Dr. Michael Idowu to the faculty of the Department of Pathology, Virginia Commonwealth University!
