"Meet Lorin M. Bachmann, PhD"

The Department of Pathology recently welcomed a new faculty member, Lorin M. Bachmann, PhD. Dr. Bachmann comes to Virginia Commonwealth University from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she recently completed three years as a Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine fellow. She received her PhD in Molecular Medicine/Microbiology from the University of Virginia in 2005.

Dr. Bachmann, an Assistant Professor of Pathology, is also filling the role of Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry. Her specific research interests involve mass spectrometry based quantification of differentially expressed proteins in biological fluids utilizing a novel proteomics platform. According to Dr. Bachmann, "This area of research is difficult because common clinical biofluids such as CSF, urine and serum contain high abundances of relatively few proteins. The presence of these few proteins in high abundance masks the presence of lower abundance, but perhaps more clinically significant proteins. In order to isolate lower abundance proteins for analysis by mass spectrometry, expensive, time-consuming fractionation techniques must be performed. For this reason, most proteomics research to date has focused on tissue specimens. Our approach utilizes simplified fractionation techniques in combination with a novel software platform to improve detection and quantification of lower abundance proteins in biofluids. Although working with biofluids provides significant challenges, this approach may elucidate new indicators for disease in common clinical specimens.”

Already involved in numerous professional societies, well-published in the peer-reviewed literature, and the recipient of several awards, Dr. Bachmann will be a tremendous asset to Clinical Pathology Services. Her professional goals:

  • Contribute to the ability of the VCU Health Systems Department of Clinical Pathology to provide outstanding laboratory service to patients, clinicians and outreach clients.
  • Provide consultation, education, and quality management service in the area of clinical chemistry.
  • Improve the identification and detection of clinically significant biomarkers in biofluids using novel proteomics techniques.

When not in the lab, you will most likely find Dr. Bachmann riding her horse or enjoying the great outdoors of the Shenandoah Valley. Her husband is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University.

Welcome to the Department of Pathology!
