| The Department of Pathology recently welcomed a new faculty member, Kimberly W. Sanford, MD. Dr. Sanford comes to Virginia Commonwealth University following employment as Associate Pathologist and Medical Director of Transfusion Services for Chippenham Medical Center, Commonwealth Laboratory Consultants, Chippenham Campus/CJW Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Sanford's medical career began at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1991 when she earned her BS in Medical Technology. Following graduation she started working in the Transfusion Medicine laboratory as a medical technologist before moving to a position in the Immunology/Virology lab where she was employed for three years, advancing to the position of Med Tech Senior. Desiring additional education, Kimberly decided to apply to medical school at VCU.
During the application process to medical school, Kimberly created a business plan for the Pathology Client Services department. The plan was adopted and has proven very successful in developing an Outreach client base for the Department of Pathology. After acceptance to VCU School of Medicine Kimberly earned her Doctor of Medicine from VCU in 2001. She spent the next five years completing a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology; she is board certified in both aspects of pathology.
Dr. Sanford, an Assistant Professor of Pathology, is also filling the role of Associate Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine and Medical Director of Stony Point Laboratory. Regarding her choice of pathology as a medical profession, she states:
"Pathology is an all encompassing field of medicine. Pathologists see patients of all ages with manifestations of a wide variety of diseases. I was drawn back to the field of Pathology for the diversity it offers. Also, my laboratory background gives me a deeper appreciation for and broader depth of understanding in pathology. Furthermore, my advisor throughout my education was Dr. David Wilkinson. His passion for the field of pathology was influential in my decision. There is a lifetime of learning in pathology."
Dr. Sanford says she is very happy to be back in academic medicine at VCU Health System, and the Department of Pathology is equally pleased that she has returned to the laboratory.
Welcome (back) to the Department of Pathology! |
