Patrick McDonough, MD & Hilda Ladenheim, MD, VCUHS Dept of Pathology Fellows, presented this week's grand rounds lecture for faculty, residents and staff.
Dr. Ladenheim's topic: “EGFR – Gene Analysis on Cytological Specimens of Adenocarcinoma of the lung” is highlighted in the following educational objectives:
- Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) targeted treatment of adenocarcinoma (AdCa) of the lung requires accurate classification of non-small cell carcinoma (NSCC) as squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma in cytology specimens.
- Detection of EGFR mutations in advanced lung adenocarcinoma patients using cytology specimens is a noninvasive procedure that selects only patients who will respond to EGFR treatment.
