Dr. O'Sullivan-Mejia: "Specimens for Future Use in Ribonucleic Acid Based Molecular Testing"

VCUHS Dept of Pathology Resident, Emerald O'Sullivan-Mejia, MD and Cytopathology Fellow, Kate Kimmelshue, MD, presented this week's grand rounds lecture for faculty, residents and staff.

Dr. Kimmelshue's topic: "A History of Fine Needle Aspiration" is highlighted in the following educational objectives:

  • Discuss the origins of the fine needle aspirations (FNA) procedure.
  • Be familiar with important figures involved with the evaluation of FNA.
  • Appreciate FNA through an understanding of how little art has changed over the last 150 years.

Dr. O'Sullivan-Mejia's topic: “The Role of Clot Sections in Bone Marrow Lymphoma Staging” is highlighted in the below educational objectives:

  • Discuss the utility of preserving cytologic specimens.
  • Discuss how ribonucleic acid from preserved cytologic specimens can be used in molecular applications.
