Carleton T. Garrett MD, PhD is emeritus professor of Pathology in the Division of Anatomic Pathology in the Department of Pathology of Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is also Director of the Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship program in Pathology.  Dr. Garrett received his MD from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and his PhD in Oncology from the University of Wisconsin. He performed his residency training in anatomic pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Wisconsin General Hospitals in Madison and is board certified in anatomical pathology.  In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Garrett manages the human cancer specimen acquisition service at VCU for cancer researchers and performs cancer research using gene expression microarrays..  Previously, he was principle investigator of a project “Acquisition of Human Cancer Residual Tissue Samples and Microarray Gene Expression Analysis” which was part of a multi institutional three million dollar grant funded by the Virginia Commonwealth Technology Research Fund entitled “Cancer Genomics and Development of Diagnostic Tools and Therapies”.  He also served as the Program Director for the latter grant.

Lynne Penberthy MD, MPH is a physician, epidemiologist who serves as the clinical director of the Massey Cancer Center Information System and MCVH Cancer Registry. She is the co-Principal Investigator for the Tissue and Data Acquisition and Analysis Core in which her primary responsibility is the acquisition and linkage of clinical and primary data related to health behavior and other epidemiologic measures. She has many years in cancer surveillance research with particular emphasis on working with, linking and analyzing large secondary databases.  Dr. Penberthy was trained in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, with two years of post-doctoral training as an EIS officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She followed this with two years at the Health Care Financing Administration’s Office of Research. She has subsequently been at the Virginia Commonwealth University where the majority of her work has focused on cancer surveillance and on bioinformatics- as it applies to cancer surveillance and clinical research in cancer control. She has served as the Principal Investigator or project director for two NIH funded RO1’s focusing on improving cancer surveillance and is currently directing the VCU component of a collaborative project to model the cancer registration project under CDC’s NPCR.

Catherine I. Dumur, PhD holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (1997) from the National University of Cordoba Argentina. Since obtaining her Ph.D., Dr. Dumur has held a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the National Research Council (Argentina) (1998). From 2000 to the present, Dr. Dumur has been a researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University, first as a Post-Doctoral Associate (2000-2001), and then as a Molecular Diagnostics Specialist (2001-2004) in the Department of Pathology. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Pathology in the Division of Molecular Diagnostics (MDx). Dr. Dumur’s research within the MDx Laboratory is in the field of cancer genomics. Her research assesses the utility of new molecular biology technologies, principally that of microarray analyses, in cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Dr. Dumur’s research has mainly contributed to the latter by establishing quality control parameters for the utilization of microarrays in a clinical environment. In the year 2002, Dr. Dumur was the recipient of the Association for Molecular Pathology Young Investigator Award. Dr. Dumur’s research has been published in the most prestigious journals in this field of research, including Genomics, Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Biochemistry, International Journal of Oncology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and others.
