RESEARCH PROGRAMS: ONCOGENOMICS

Dr. Youngman Oh, PhDDr. Youngman Oh, PhD, Professor of Pathology, is the Director of our Oncogenomics and Proteomics Research Program. His laboratory complements the work already being done within the Division of Cellular and Molecular Pathogenesis, specifically in the Functional Genomics Program.

The laboratory of Dr. Youngman Oh has been studying the IGF-IGFBP system in cancer for a decade. Studies from his laboratory (and others) have demonstrated an important role for IGFBP-3 in regulating the growth of human cancer cells, independent of its role as a modulator of IGF-I bioactivity.

Dr. Oh's laboratory is currently focusing on several projects including the IGFBP-3/IGFBP-3R axis in human cancer and the pathophysiology of the IGFBP-related proteins in a variety of human disease using microarray assays and proteomics.

The IGFBP-related proteins (IGFBP-rPs), which are newly identified IGFBP species from Dr. Oh's laboratory, appear to be potent regulators for cell proliferation and differentiation in a variety of normal and malignant cells. Currently his laboratory is investigating the impact of the IGFBP-rPs on anti-proliferative effects in breast, lung and prostate cancer as well as fibrosis in liver and other tissues. These studies will allow us to extend our investigation of novel mechanisms of IGFBP and IGFBP-rP action in a variety of human cancer cell growth, and to develop potential diagnostic or prognostic parameters for the cancer evaluation.

The long-term goal of Dr. Oh's research is the application of these systems in gene therapy and clinical trials for drug resistant patients.

Dr. Oh may be contacted at yoh@vcu.edu.
