The Divisions of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology welcomes interested medical students. Even if you're not planning a career in pathology, understanding how the laboratories function is very helpful in your future role. In addition, individuals planning to enter the fields of hematology, surgery, and anesthesia, can have experiences in specific areas of the lab (eg, transfusion medicine), that may not be offered in residency programs. In addition to formal courses and rotations, any medical students interested in observing in anatomic and clinical pathology areas can contact Dr. Sanford, Dr. Richard or Hattie Wyche.
A Foundational Elective in Pathology is offered to MS3 medical students. This two-week elective consists of observational experiences in all sections of the department, including Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Autopsy, Transfusion Medicine, Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, and an optional visit to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Formal electives and acting internships are available to MS4 medical students.
M4 Pathology Electives
Students at all levels are invited to attend periodic meetings of the Pathology Club, which offers lunchtime discussions of the role of Pathology and pathologists in clinical medicine.
